The 17th century was the century that lasted from January 1, , to Decem It falls into the Early Modern period of Europe and in that continent (whose impact on the world was increasing) was characterized by the Baroque cultural movement, the latter part of the Spanish Golden Age, the Dutch Golden Age, the French Grand Siècle dominated by Louis XIV, the Scientific Revolution.

      Seventeenth century Albany had four principal public buildings. The city hall was located near the water on Court Street; the Dutch Reformed Church set in the middle of the city's main intersection; a smaller Lutheran Church which often was without a pastor; and a more imposing wooden fort located up the hillside and overlooking the community. The Albany Register appeared weekly from to The Chronicle issued in And the Albany Centinel was published in the city between and The great Albany newspapers of the nineteenth century, the Albany Argus (from ) and the Albany Evening Journal (from ), have proven important sources of new material as well.
